XBS Packaging Academy

Good packaging
starts with
the product.

Customer education / PPWR

PPWR. What changes
for packaging?

Regulation (EU) 2025/40 on packaging and packaging waste applies from 12 August 2026. Individual requirements take effect in stages. This is a good time to organise your materials, documentation and packing processes.

01 / SIZE

A box sized for the product

Review packaging dimensions, empty space and the protection the contents actually need.

02 / MATERIALS

Considered material selection

Check the composition and properties of packaging and void fill. Consider requirements for the intended use and recyclability.

03 / DOCUMENTATION

Information from suppliers

Establish your company's role in the supply chain. Check which information, technical documents and declarations your situation requires.

04 / PROCESS

A consistent packing method

Agree standards for products and kits. Monitor material use, product protection and the quality of finished parcels.

Key questions
about PPWR.

Packaging appearance, product protection and packaging requirements should be considered together. Below, we explain the dates and context of the changes.

Do all requirements apply from 12 August 2026?

No. This is the general date on which PPWR starts to apply. Labelling, limits on empty space and recyclability requirements have separate deadlines. The European Commission identifies further stages from 2028 and 2030; check the specific date for each obligation.

Is paper packaging automatically compliant with PPWR?

Choosing paper and an attractive design does not establish compliance. Packaging composition, function and design, the requirements for its intended use and the documentation also matter. The gallery provides visual inspiration that must be adapted to each operation.

Why organise your process now?

Missing documents or non-compliant packaging may require corrective action. Poland's draft UC100 legislation also provides for withdrawal of packaging from the market at the operator's own expense for specified infringements. Such changes may affect costs and dispatch schedules.

Where does the proposed fine of up to PLN 2 million come from?

The UC100 draft of 21 July 2026 provides for fines of PLN 10,000 to PLN 2,000,000 for specified infringements by manufacturers and importers, including placing non-compliant packaging on the market. These amounts relate to that version of the draft and the specified infringements. The applicable sanctions must be checked against the relevant national legislation in force and the operator's role.
